5 TIPS TO UP YOUR RUNNING GAME

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

Running is one of the most basic forms of exercise – as long as you have a pair of running shoes and a road (or treadmill, or trail, or beach, …) you can go running and get a good workout in!

Here are a few tips on how to stay motivated and maximize your running workout:

  • Accept the Challenge: Sign up for a race – whether it’s a 5K or a marathon, it doesn’t matter. Having a goal and deadline to train toward will help keep you motivated.
  • Get the right Gear: If you’re running often, it’s worth investing in a good pair of running pants. The compression capri from Zobha are engineered to increase blood flow and mesh paneling lends added support.
  • Jam Sessions: Make a killer playlist to listen to while you run. When you think you can’t go any further, coax yourself to make it through 2 more full songs and run your heart out!
  • Plan Your Route: Giving yourself a set route (and distance) will help you to stick to your goals. With sites like mapmyrun.com out there its super easy to enter your start and end points and figure out a good route in your area.
  • STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH!: We cannot stress this enough – getting a good stretch in before and after you go running is crucial! It’s easy to pull a muscle when you’re giving it your all. Be sure to get a good stretch in your legs, calves and feet before heading out.

I hope you’ve found these tips helpful. If you have any questions or tips of your own share them in the comments section below.

Yoga & Breakfast: Raising Money for The Whole Planet Foundation

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

On the heals of a great month for philanthropy at Zobha, we are excited to share some highlights from one of our local events we did here in Mill Valley.

Zobha partnered with Whole Foods Market, Gaiam and YogaWorks Studios to put on an event that raised money for the Whole Planet Foundation, which helps families in need in third world countries.

On a beautiful Saturday morning over President’s Day weekend, we gathered at the Whole Foods Market in Mill Valley, CA for a donation based yoga class led by one of Zobha’s Circle of Grace members, Lisa Rueff. We had a great turn out for the yoga class and people of all ages came to participate in the event. It was my first time doing yoga outside, and let me tell you, it was a game changer! It’s so nice to do a sun salutation and actually be able to look up at the sun shining down on you!

Following the yoga class we had an amazing breakfast catered by Whole Foods.  Check out more photos from the day on our Facebook page.

The Zobha team was so grateful to be included in this great event and it was such a success that we, along with the other partners from that day, are all working together to plan another Whole Planet Foundation fundraiser around the Spring Equinox in March! Stay tuned for details!

3 Tips to Finding a Workout Class That Suits You

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Hello Friends of Zobha,

If you’re anything like me, you know how hard it can be to find a workout class that motivates you and keeps you coming back for more. I have tried a ton of different classes but even after I find the type of workout I want to do, I wind up trying a number of different instructors before landing on the one that’s right for me. As a result I have found myself getting in a rut and not trying new workouts. To keep myself going I have put together a short list of to-do’s before I sign up for a new class! Hopefully these can help others experiencing the same struggle:

  1. Prior to signing up, research your options online or on Yelp. This way you can get a gist of what students have experienced in the past including the good, the bad, and the ugly.
  2. Make sure to look into whether or not there’s any prep work needed upon arrival. For example, if they prefer you to show up to class 10 minutes early, this would be the perfect time to call ahead and check!
  3. Last but not least, make sure to pick a class that suits your fitness level. From yoga classes to boot camps, this ensures you know what you’re getting yourself into!

Hopefully these tips will help end your tiring and strenuous search for the perfect class.  As for now, what’s the latest workout class you’ve taken?  We want to know!

Grace of Giving Scholarship Winner: Chelsea Albucher

Friday, November 30th, 2012

As owner and creator of Zobha, I am often asked to discuss our brand, business model and of course, our beautiful clothing.  Few people know, however, how very much I love to discuss Zobha’s greater mission: to make a positive, lasting impact on our community.

I established the Zobha Foundation so that a portion of our resources could be used to help youth maximize their potential and also to promote education and wellness in our local and world communities.  We are partners with Headstand, a non-profit that brings yoga and wellness programs to schools in at-risk communities.  The Zobha Foundation also gives annually to breast cancer research, treatment and awareness programs.

Each year, however, I particularly look forward to selecting the recipient of Zobha’s Grace of Giving Scholarship.  The scholarship is an annual grant awarded to qualified applicants for study in an approved yoga or other fitness training program.  In addition to demonstrating financial need, our applicants must effectively communicate the ways in which they will use their training to serve a community in need.

I am delighted to announce Chelsea Albucher as this year’s recipient of Zobha’s Grace of Giving Scholarship.  Chelsea pursued the scholarship so that she could unite two of her great passions, yoga and sustainable community development.  Chelsea is a environmental scientist, certified urban planner and Visiting Professor at Pratt University in the graduate Environmental Systems Management program. She has practiced yoga for the past ten years and she plans to use her teacher training to offer yoga classes at community and job training centers in distressed, urban communities.  She believes that yoga can be an invaluable part of any job training and work readiness program.  And this dynamic, intelligent woman knows what she is talking about!  Through her work with the US EPA and as a former Sustainability Officer with the City of Newark, New Jersey, Chelsea has spent over a decade connecting non-traditionally educated people from economically challenged communities to green jobs that pay a living wage.

In the long-term, Chelsea would like to develop a program that exposes young adults to career pathways in the fields of health and wellness.  I am energized and inspired by her dedication.  And as a business woman, I respect Chelsea’s pragmatic, focused approach to educating and mobilizing young people to cultivate wellness within their own communities.

Chelsea’s personal definition of “grace” is one of the most beautiful and honest I have ever heard.  “Grace to me, is the ability to be soft and strong.  To return to a pose after stumbling with equanimity, without agitation.  Grace is smiling in traffic, even at cursing cabbies.  Grace is respecting, loving and celebrating our bodies, its capacities and constraints-letting injuries and tightness become tools of awareness.  Grace is acknowledging moments, even the fleeting moment of passing a stranger by in the street and sharing a gentle smile in recognition.”

This year’s selection process has been especially meaningful to me.  Each time Zobha gives to an individual or organization, we make our core business values manifest.  So, I’d like to say thank you to Chelsea Albucher, and to all of our other grantees.  Zobha is so very honored to support your vital work.

Staying Fit Over the Holidays

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

Hello Zobha Community-

With the holidays approaching a lot of people are on the go visiting friends and family, which usually means lots of food and a departure from your regular workout routine. Thankfully, I have a few simple workout tips that you can do in the comfort of your home, or your in-law’s guest room, to help burn some of those extra calories coming your way!

Head back to basics with floor exercises. This can include anything from push-ups and lunges, to yoga sequences and stretches.  Whether or not these moves are old news, the results never fail!

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Planks. These are great for strengthening your arms while also sculpting your abs. Try holding this for a minimum of 30 seconds, then work your way up to a minute.
  • Squats. When all else fails, squats are always my go-to exercise. If you’re looking to spice things up, grab a soup can or two to add some weight and resistance. Before you know it, you’ll have gorgeous lean legs in no time!
  •  Vinyasa. This basic yoga sequence is the perfect exercise if you want to tone your arms without using weights. Lay out your yoga mat, turn on some music, and enjoy some time to yourself.

With these simple tips you can enjoy family time while still keeping yourself active.

Happy Holidays!

Zobha and Kiddo! Host Yoga in the Square

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Dear friends of the Zobha community,

October was such an exciting month for us. One event that we are especially proud of took place on Saturday, October 20th, when Zobha and Kiddo! teamed up to invite the Mill Valley community out for the first, of hopefully many, “Yoga in The Square” events. Susan Hauser, Zobha Circle of Grace member and power yoga teacher at Red Dragon Yoga in Mill Valley, hosted the outdoor yoga class and led the crowd through an energizing power yoga class. People of all ages came out to join us, even those walking by for a morning stroll, to support Kiddo!

Following the yoga class, participants were invited across the street to the Zobha store for refreshments, goodie bags, and of course … shopping! Everyone had a great time and 15% of sales from the event went to support Kiddo! Nothing beats shopping for a good cause!

We were especially excited to kick off this partnership with Kiddo! in give back to the community we touch, as Mill Valley is very close to our hearts. We hope that this successful event may resonate among the local community and that their common desire to help others will further enhance the opportunity for local kids to explore what moves them.

Zobha Opens Flagship Retail Store in Mill Valley

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Dear friends of the Zobha community,

Last Thursday marked a major milestone for Zobha. Four years ago this brand was born from my desire to create a fitness line that would capture the perfect combination of fashion, elegance, and function. Today as I reflect back on where we started and how this brand has grown to be sold in over 400 stores around the world, I am so proud to add our very own retail location to the list of accomplishments!

On Thursday night we celebrated the grand opening of the first of our many planned retail stores, this one being right here in our own backyard in Mill Valley, CA. It has been a long journey to get here, but seeing the store come to life as our biggest supporters, family and friends packed into our new home on Miller Avenue was one of my proudest moments as the creator of Zobha.

Four years ago I was moved to start this brand, and today that movement has carried through to the team that now makes up our Zobha community. It was an honor to see all those who have worked to make this brand what it is, come together to celebrate our accomplishments. Zobha, meaning “grace, beauty and brilliance,” is everything I hoped it would be. I am proud to say that the brand has brought these words to life both in our clothing designs and in our desire to give back to our community. We want everyone to have the opportunity to unearth and discover what moves them. This weekend we welcome Mill Valley residents to join us for Yoga in the Square and begin their personal exploration into what moves them.

How to get a body like Jason Statham

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Hello Zobha Community-

As a celebrity trainer, I get to work alongside some of Hollywood’s top stars. Specifically, I get to train even some of the top tough guys in the industry, including Jason Statham. Like women, men often have inspiration on who they would like to look like, even if they don’t like to admit it. Many times, Jason Statham tops that list.

Along with good genetics, Jason always works hard in the gym. Something that people may not know about him is that he was an Olympic diver before his acting career. He naturally trains like an athlete, doing everything with intensity. Here is an inside look at what it takes to get a body like Jason.

First, start out warming up with dynamic flexibility which means stretching while moving. I then incorporate ladder drills to get his feet moving fast without the need to look. In Jason’s case, he does a great deal of stunt work so working on his lateral speed and agility is important.

Next, I would incorporate boxing and kickboxing moves to work on the lower abs and back. A lot of times we would do workouts that had a lot to do with what he was performing in a scene. This is something Jason refers to as “functional fitness.”

For example, when doing squats we would implement punches which would also increase intensity. A healthy diet is key. Eating lean will provide a better workout and allow you to build muscle. No matter how hard you exercise, it’s imperative to maintain a health diet.

Also, keep in mind when preparing to do any workout, clothing is important – many of the workouts Jason and I have done will leave you swimming in sweat! But not if you’re wearing gear that offers moisture wicking technology.

Hope some of these tips work for you, tell us who your celeb inspiration is and what are you currently doing to get that physique?
